Surah Al-Ghashiyah
Translation by:
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
Hal atāka ḥadīṡul-gāsyiyah(ti).
Has the news of the Overwhelming Event reached you ˹O Prophet˺?
-
Wujūhuy yauma'iżin khāsyi‘ah(tun).
On that Day ˹some˺ faces will be downcast,
-
‘Amilatun nāṣibah(tun).
˹totally˺ overburdened, exhausted,
-
Taṣlā nāran ḥāmiyah(tan).
burning in a scorching Fire,
-
Tusqā min ‘ainin āniyah(tin).
left to drink from a scalding spring.
-
Laisa lahum ṭa‘āmun illā min ḍarī‘(in).
They will have no food except a foul, thorny shrub,
-
Lā yusminu wa lā yugnī min jū‘(in).
neither nourishing nor satisfying hunger.
-
Wujūhuy yauma'iżin nā‘imah(tun).
On that Day ˹other˺ faces will be glowing with bliss,
-
Lisa‘yihā rāḍiyah(tun).
˹fully˺ pleased with their striving,
-
Fī jannatin ‘āliyah(tin).
in an elevated Garden,
-
Lā tasama‘u fīhā lāgiyah(tan).
where no idle talk will be heard.
-
Fīhā ‘ainun jāriyah(tun).
In it will be a running spring,
-
Fīhā sururum marfū‘ah(tun).
along with thrones raised high,
-
Wa akwābum mauḍū‘ah(tun).
and cups set at hand,
-
Wa namāriqu maṣfūfah(tun).
and ˹fine˺ cushions lined up,
-
Wa zarābiyyu mabṡūṡah(tun).
and ˹splendid˺ carpets spread out.
-
Afalā yanẓurūna ilal-ibili kaifa khuliqat.
Do they not ever reflect on camels—how they were ˹masterfully˺ created;
-
Wa ilas-samā'i kaifa rufi‘at.
and the sky—how it was raised ˹high˺;
-
Wa ilal-jibāli kaifa nuṣibat.
and the mountains—how they were firmly set up;
-
Wa ilal-arḍi kaifa suṭiḥat.
and the earth—how it was levelled out?
-
Fa żakkir, innamā anta mużakkir(un).
So, ˹continue to˺ remind ˹all, O Prophet˺, for your duty is only to remind.
-
Lasta ‘alaihim bimusaiṭir(in).
You are not ˹there˺ to compel them ˹to believe˺.
-
Illā man tawallā wa kafar(a).
But whoever turns away, persisting in disbelief,
-
Fa yu‘ażżibuhullāhul-‘ażābal-akbar(a).
then Allah will inflict upon them the major punishment.
-
Inna ilainā iyābahum.
Surely to Us is their return,
-
Ṡumma inna ‘alainā ḥisābahum.
then surely with Us is their reckoning.
